MEET THE AUTHOR

I am James Macdonald and 5 years ago, I was stressed and overwhelmed at my role as a husband and exhausted father of 3, not really knowing how to be the best man I could be. When my partner was pregnant, I realized nearly everything out there was written for mums. Dads? We were the afterthought, told to be supportive, stay calm, and not screw it up.

Many years, pitfalls and enough flat whites to sink a battleship later, I’m a lot happier and confident and on a mission to help other dads be the best family man they can be without losing their minds.

So I wrote the book I desperately needed. No preaching. No judgment. Just real, week-by-week support for men who want to show up, stay sane, and be damn good partners and dads.

First Time Dad is for the new(ish) dads who feel totally overwhelmed at their new responsibility and feel like their mental health is on a slow and silent decline.

WHAT TO EXPECT FOR REAL THIS TIME

From Week 1 to Week 42, finally a guide that speaks your language. No fluff, no fear-mongering, just clarity.

This book isn’t just theory. It’s a week-by-week breakdown of what’s happening in her body, in your relationship, and in your head.

  • Week-to-week explanations of what’s happening for your baby and inside your partner

  • How to be a big help, not a major hindrance, during the delivery

  • How to help your partner get physically fit and ready for birth

  • How to keep her & your sense of humour during those high-pressure moments

  • How to mentally prepare for the birth if you're squeamish

  • Advice on having sex and maintaining intimacy throughout pregnancy

  • How to keep calm when all hell is breaking loose

  • What a birth plan is and how to prepare one

  • What nesting is and how to use it to your advantage

  • What you can do to develop, strengthen and prepare your mental health for the big day and beyond it

  • Road-tested survival tips for dads to ensure you don't continue to put your foot in it

No Nonsense. No Guilt Trips. Just the Truth for Dads.

  • Written by a real dad not a midwife, not a doctor, not your mum’s therapist

  • Tackles men’s mental health with honesty, not shame

  • Helps you support her without losing yourself

  • Includes humor, survival tips, and “say-this-not-that” scripts

  • Speaks your language: straight-talking, relatable, and actually useful

  • Cuts through the noise so you know what actually matters (and what doesn’t)

  • Prepares you for the emotional curveballs no one warns you about

  • Gives you tools to step up without feeling like you’re messing up

  • Shows you how to stay connected as a couple, not just co-parents

  • Reminds you you’re not alone, and you’re not broken for finding it hard

This is the book I wish I’d had — calm, clear, no preachy nonsense. Just someone who gets it.
